Outside, the plant emerges in early May, rapidly growing as the weather warms to a height of 4m or more.
The blooms, which are very unique** and beautiful, begin in early July and continue until frost.
The fruit, an oval berry, is edible but seedy. It has been used to make jellies since pioneer days.
Growing From Seed
Soak seed in warm water for 12 hours before sowing outdoors in spring.
Germination is slow, From 3 weeks up to a year. Usually in 4 to 8 weeks.
* Growing as a Houseplant
Growing as a houseplant can be achieved from either seeds or bare rooted plants.
Sow seed as you would outside, making sure that the soil is not allowed to dry until germination begins.
Once germination has begun or if planting bare root plants, the following applies.
Place plants in a window which receives at least four hours of sun each day. Provide lateral support for the vines, water as needed, and fertilize every 4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
**The flowers are both beautiful and unique. Missionaries in the 1500's named the plant the Passion Flower due to the fact that several parts of the plant symbolize features of the crucifixation of Christ.
