THE BEST-SELLING WHISKY IN THE U.K., BELL'S GOES BACK TO 1851,WHEN ARTHUR BELL CREATED THE ORIGINAL BLEND. THEY STARTED SELLING IT IN BELL-SHAPED DECANTERS IN THE 1920S, MADE BY ROYAL DOULTON AND THEN SPODE BEFORE WADE TOOK OVER PRODUCTION IN 1966. THIS DECANTER IS FROM THE 1980S AND IS OVER 40 YEARS OLD!
AGED AND BLENDED WHISKEY: Bells blended whiskey is still made from thirty-five different whiskies matured for between five and twelve years.
VALUE: These decanters have remained extremely valuable due to their rarity and/or the quality of the whisky within. The Bell's Decanters series is now discontinued as well increasing its value. TODAY THESE DECANTER ARE DISCONTINUEDTHEY DO NOT MAKE THEM ANYMORE.
SHAPE OF A BELL: When you're designing a decanter for Bell's Blended Scotch Whisky, you don't design some sort of lion or a guitar. You make a bell just like this one. The clue is in the name. This particular decanter comes from the 1970s.
BELLS WHISKEY: Arthur Bell had previously worked for a Scottish drinks merchant, when he joined the company in 1837 and became a partner in 1851.Arthur could see the great opportunities in blended whisky and travelled around Scotland and the Isles to find malt whiskies for his own blends. He worked against the grain and, rather than using young, poorly matured whiskies for blending, he made a point of sourcing only well-aged spirit.
After his sons joined the business and in 1904 a whisky was released under the name Arthur Bell & Sons Extra Special Old Scotch Whisky.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCOTCH AND BLENDED SCOTCH?
Single Malt Scotch Whisky is also a blend, but it is a blend of malt whisky produced in just one distillery so in effect the word 'single' means 'single place of origin' whereas Blended Scotch Whisky is a blend of grain and malt whisky from multiple distilleries.
DOES BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKEY GET BETTER OR GO OFF WITHAGE?
UNLIKE WINE, AN UNOPENED BOTTLE OF WHISKEY DOES NOT GET BETTER THE LONGER IT SITS ON YOUR SHELF. THE AMOUNT OF TIME THE WHISKEY SPENDS IN A BARREL MAKES A DIFFERENCE THOUGH. The wood from the barrels in which a Scotch (or any whisky) is aged in tends to break down the rougher flavors in the alcohol, leaving you with a smoother taste. UNLIKE WINE HOWEVER IT ALSO DOES NOT GO OFF WITH AGE. IT CAN SIT THERE FOR YEARS, EVEN MANY DECADES, AND STILL BE GOOD TO DRINK.
WHERE IS BELLS WHISKY MADE?
The Blair Athol distillery, where Bell's is produced, was established in 1798 and is one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. In the same distillery, the distinctive taste of Bell's comes together with a select blend of grain and fine malt whiskies, all matured in selected oak casks for a richer flavour.
HOW DO YOU DRINK BELLS WHISKEY?
ON THE ROCKS! A couple of cubes of ice and a splash of water releases the rich, distinctive character of Bell's Blended Scotch Whisky and allow you to savour its appealing, rounded qualities.
