NOTES | For fifty years George Wilson] has played his part in South African affairs, during all of which he was on the staff of one of our great dailies (newspapers), and during many years the chief editor and guide of its policy. As such he had unusual opportunities and facilities not only of studying and watching the public scene, but also of seeing what was going on behind the scene. He knew personally most of the men eminent in public life during that period. With many of them he was on terms of more or less intimacy, and he could thus follow not only their actions but the motives behind the actions. Reminiscences such as his are therefore the very stuff of which history is made. The stories he tells span the period from before the Boer War until near the end of the political reign of the United Party. |
