Gabriel De Jongh (South African, 1913-2004)
Homestead Below Mountain, Cape Town Oil on Board, 31 × 16.5 cm
Signed lower right
About the Artist:
Gabriel De Jongh was one of South Africa's most recognisable landscape painters, renowned for panoramic mountain scenes, Cape Dutch homesteads, and masterful treatment of light. The son of famed artist Tinus De Jongh, Gabriel trained under his father and furthered his studies in Europe, bringing a classical approach to his depictions of the South African countryside.
About the Artwork:
This oil painting captures a Cape homestead nestled below mountain ranges. Warm early lones in the foreground contrast with the cooler hues of the distant peaks, crealing depth and almosphere. The reflective water in the foreground leads the viewer's gaze loward the homestead. De Jongh's brushwork blends fine detail with broader, expressive landscape strokes.
