A particularly attractive original Cape landscape by renowned South African artist Gabriel Cornelis de Jongh (19132004), depicting Hout Bay framed by its dramatic surrounding mountains.
De Jongh captures the turquoise sweep of the bay, pale beach, rugged mountain slopes and indigenous Cape vegetation with the atmospheric light and accomplished brushwork for which his Western Cape landscapes are especially admired.
This is a beautifully balanced and immediately recognisable Cape composition. The elevated viewpoint draws the eye through the sunlit foreground and across the water toward the mountains, creating an exceptional sense of depth and place.
The work is signed Gabriel de Jongh at the lower left and is executed in oil on canvas mounted on board.
