Gallienus, son of Valerian I, was named Caesar when his father accessioned to the throne in 253 A.D. When Valerian I was captured by the Parthians Gallienus assumed the rank of Augustus. He began numerous reforms and military campaigns to defend the empire. Gallienus associated with poets, artists and philosophers in what was perhaps the last bloom of classic Roman culture. Gallienus was assassinated while besieging Milan.
