This is a robust pair of GALVANISED STEEL storage tins, featuring a heavy-duty utilitarian design. Each tin is equipped with a secure HINGED LID and a front-facing TOGGLE LATCH with an integrated eyelet, allowing the contents to be secured with a small padlock. The galvanised finish provides excellent resistance to rust and corrosion, making these ideal for both indoor and outdoor storage.
PROVENANCE AND FUNCTION These tins are classic examples of MID-20TH CENTURY INDUSTRIAL HARDWARE. While they do not bear a specific manufacturer's stamp, their dimensions and lockable design suggest they were originally intended as CASH BOXES, DEED BOXES, or specialized COMPARTMENT TINS for sensitive equipment or workshop supplies.
Small lockable tins of this nature were a staple in South African and European workshops, laboratories, and even for domestic "strongbox" use before the prevalence of plastic alternatives. The galvanised coating (a process of applying a protective zinc layer to steel) was the industry standard for ensuring longevity in humid or coastal environments, such as those found in South Africa.
