Colin Vary received his first shotgun, a single barrel 12-bore for his ninth birthday. By the time he was 12 he had saved enough money through the sale of rabbit and fox skins to buy a double barrel shotgun. The regular wingshooting of snipe, duck and quail over the following six years honed his skills to the point where, at the age of 14, he won the Christmas shoot at the local gun club bird shoot, beating his father and other local \'crack-shots\'.
Colin left England in 1966 and moved to East London in South Africa, where he had his first encounter with the superb greywing francolin in the Dordrecht area. In 1969 he relocated to Pietermaritzburg, expanding his experience with many more gamebirds throughout Kwazulu-Natal and the Transvaal.
