Garmin GPS 3 Plus
This unit is used but in as-new condition. PC Cable and Fugawi software included.
Ditch the clumsy map in your glove compartment because you'll never get
lost again with the GARMIN GPS III
Plus. A GPS (global positioning system) device works by reading signals
from several satellites above the earth. The device notes the distance to
each satellite and computes these distances into a mathematical formula to
denote the device's exact position. Using this data, GPS devices can tell
users where they are and how to get where they're going.
The GPS III Plus only needs four AA batteries and a view of the sky to
initialize itself in 15 to 45 seconds. Users who are indoors or under heavy
cover may have difficulty receiving signals, but we had no trouble doing this
inside a car or by a window.
The device includes a special cable for you to connect it to your computer
and retrieve maps from additional mapping software if you want; although,
the GPS III Plus has so many maps already in memory that you probably
won't need to do this. The preprogrammed maps detail lakes, towns, roads,
state and national borders, and other map-worthy landmarks. You can
program an additional 500 waypoints or personal points of interest, such as
your hotel address. Then, the next time you choose a waypoint, the GPS III
Plus device guides you to it with no more than a 49-foot margin of error. (It
can narrow this down to a 3- to 15-foot margin of error with an optional
receiver.)
You can retrieve all sorts of other data from the 9-ounce GPS III Plus just
by pushing buttons on the front of the device. Find out sunrise and sunset
times, time and date, direction, altitude, current speed, distance traveled,
and distance left to go. The only button we didn't like was the one-button
rocker keypad, which you must awkwardly manipulate to name your
waypoints.
The GPS III Plus is a versatile personal navigator, offering a little something
for every type of user.
