The brothers, Georg Christoph Heubach and Phillip Jakob Heubach bought an established porcelain factory around 1843 in Lichte, Germany. There appears relatively little history on what was produced by the factory in the beginnings, but, by  the 1880s, the company became very well known for its figurines, including superb animal figures, vases, piano babies and for its bisque dolls and doll heads. One of the secrets to Heubachs success was the fact that they employed budding artists and sculptors from the Art School which was located close to them. Many dolls have the initials of well known artists of the time included in the markings. Zitzmann, Krieger, Holwein, and Niemeyer were well known artists who spent time at the factory.
The bisque, hand-painted dolls were most sought after, they were character dolls, often portraying different emotions, such as a sulky look, flirty faces etc. They had moulded hair or actual wigs, superb hand-blown glass eyes or painted eyes.  By 1910, Heubach was exporting large quantities to the States as well as making heads for other doll companies.

The Character Jug, as shown above, is unusual. Produced in fine porcelain and hand-painted, it remains in excellent condition with no cracks or chips.  There are a few small spots where the paint has been smudged during its manufacture.  It shows the Heubach Sunburst symbol as an impressed mark with the interlinked G and H initials and the D.E.P. symbol depicting it was made in Germany. But, I can find no information on their character jugs at all, nor can I find any similar jugs on the internet. Possibly they were produced in limited numbers or produced for a special occasion. The jug stands 11 cm to the top of the handle and is 8.5 cm in width and a depth of 13 cm.
