At Zanzibar he sought to stamp out the slave trade and took an active role in assisting British geographic explorers such as Captains Burton and Speke who journeyed to Lake Tangangyika and Victoria Nyanza. He was a noted linguist and an early member of the Royal Geographic Society (Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society and Monthly Record of Geography, Vol.7, No. 6)
