SPANISH ROYAL GUARD FLINTLOCK PISTOL
18th Century genuine flintlock - not a replica - 250 + years old
Very rarely seen on the market!
Up for sale is a genuine flintlock pistol as issued to the Spanish Royal Guard during the 1700's. As far as I could determine it dates from approximately the mid 1700's.
What is known about the pistol is only what we could manage to research.
Every effort is made to provide an accurate description and details, but it is up to the buyer to do his own research, study the images provided and ask questions if there is any uncertainty about anything.
The inscription on the barrel reads ""R! Cuerpo de Guard, de la Percona del Rey." There is also a number "30 2A No 62". The Spanish royal crest is visible here along with another unknown symbol.
The pistol has an interesting mechanical safety and a ramrod keeper, apparently to ensure it stays put when worn by a mounted soldier. The ramrod fits in the holder very tightly and takes some effort to pull out. It then swivels around on the elbow and can be used while still attached to the pistol.
There is a light layer of surface rust on the steel parts. The mechanism works and triggers fairly easily. The stock has a split in the wood just forward of the mechanism that has been repaired.
As can be seen in the 2nd image below, the screw that holds the barrel to the stock is missing. Because of this the barrel is not tightly secured.
When looked at closely, the wood and metal parts do not align perfectly everywhere. I am not sure if this could indicate that the stock was replaced at some stage. The wood looks pretty old, so I doubt it could have been replaced recently. Please have a look at the images for reference.
The pistol has a total length of about 38cm. The barrel has a 14mm inside diameter. Not sure what caliber it is but it sure is a heavy one compared to modern pistols!
