PIETER JOSEPH VAN REENEN (1877-unknown): Pieter Joseph Vin van Reenen was born in 1877 and married Florence Eleanor Cross better known as Tottie. This is where Totties Farm Kitchen (and Sunday Market) gets its name from. Pieter wanted to farm and Cape Town was too expensive and the prospects were not that great either. They considered Kenya, and took the train from Cape Town to George, whereafter they took a horse-drawn cart and followed the road along the Seven Passes to Knysna. In 1920, the Van Reenen family bought the Rheenendal Farm a short distance from Knysna and Tottie started her shop (and later also butchery) from an old storeroom behind the main farmhouse. The shop moved to its current position and also served as the showroom for the stinkwood furniture and other items they produced, as well as a petrol station and postal service for the area.
WHITE STINKWOOD (CELTIS AFRICANA): Celtis Africana is commonly known as white stinkwood because of the unpleasant smell of the freshly cut wood and its pale colour. It is very unfortunate that it has this common name as it causes confusion with the true stinkwood, Ocotea Bullata (Black Stinkwood). These two species do not look similar, nor are they closely related. Black stinkwood, also found in South Africa in particular, is a protected species due to over-exploitation. The wood of Celtis trees, commonly called Stinkwood (though not the true Black Stinkwood), is used for various purposes including construction, furniture, and tool handles. The wood is relatively soft, but strong enough for furniture, shelves, and tool handles. It was also traditionally used for making yokes for oxes.Certain parts of the tree are used in traditional medicine. The tree's berries and leaves are a food source for various birds and animals and is known to attract wildlife, including monkeys, baboons, and a wide variety of bird species.
