Genuine 48 cm Amber Necklace - Ref. A1-1B Dark Cognac colour

Amber is one of the earliest known materials  to be used for jewellery,  amulets and carvings, and, beads , dating back to Early Stone Age people  (12,000 years ago) have been uncovered in southern England dating to 11,000 B.C. The peat bogs in Denmark have also yielded pieces of Amber, the earliest known piece being a pendant carved in the shape of a person  and dating to the 7,000 B.C. era.
Amber was very much in demand with both the Romans and the Greeks, both for its medical properties as well as its mystical properties. The Romans believed that Amber would protect them from physical harm and all gladiators kept an Amber amulet on their persons.
The Greeks thought Amber was parts of the sun which had fallen off into the sea and the Chinese thought Amber housed the spirit of the tiger, whilst the Egyptians believed it would cure wounds.
From the medicinal side, Amber was used to treat insanity, bronchitis, rheumatism and arthritis, head and neck complaints and was known for its anti-bacterial properties. Hippocrates (460-377 BC) wrote extensively about the uses of Ambers as did Pliny the Elder who stated that wearing Amber beads helped in the relief of pain. And, yes, Amber does help with pain.  Amber contains Succinic Acid, which is absorbed into the bloodstream and helps with healing, anti-inflammatory, stress and pain.  Babies are often given Amber necklaces to chew on during teething.

Baltic amber has high concentrations of succinic acid, and with from 3% to 8% succinic acid by weight, is one of the most important natural sources of succinic acid in the world.   Succinic acid from Baltic amber was analysed by Robert Koch (1886), the pioneer of modern bacteriology who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1905. Koch confirmed the positive health influences of this substance and discovered that there is no risk of the accumulation of surplus amounts of succinic acid in the human organism.   Succinic acid is commercially produced, widely used and approved for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration. It was originally employed by European scientists and military doctors to bolster the body’s immunity to radiation from industrial accidents. It is touted in Russia and other European countries for its youth preserving and cell rejuvenating properties and is commonly used in anti-aging formulations and to aid recovery of cancer patients after undergoing conventional medical treatment. It has been shown to strengthen immunity to ionizing radiation, infections, alcohol and other toxins.

What is Baltic Amber? Baltic amber is a fossilized resin produced by coniferous trees from the Pinaceae family. A large number of conifers belonging to different genera are represented in the amber-flora, all given the collective name Pinus succinifera. These include Pines as well as Cedrus (cedar from the Atlas Mountains) and Larix spp. (larch) which grew in Northern Europe around the Baltic Sea 40 million to 200 million years ago.  As atmospheric change occurred and the climate warmed, the conifer trees in the Tertiary forests of northern Europe began exuding large amounts of resin in an effort to adapt to the changing earth environment. As the millennia progressed, these exudations sank to the Baltic Sea floor and gradually, over the eons, became stable through oxidation, the action of micro-organisms and other processes.

The Amber necklace, as shown above, is of Baltic origin. Apart from the clasp which is an imitation plastic, there are roughly 58-60 baroque-shaped genuine Baltic Amber beads, measuring from arount 6mm to 9mm in size with the necklace length of 47cm – 48 cm. And, yes, I am graduate gemmologist F.G.A of fifty years standing, (Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain) and will personally guarantee that these beads are genuine.
