MAKE A WISH first before you open the can to get the pearl out.
About Pearls
Being an organic gem, grooves, pits or dents are expected. Very common are the natural lines which form around the pearl. These are known as growth rings or "love lines". Freshwater pearls are popular for their colours -- white, silver white, cream white, pink, red, copper, brown, lavender, purple/lavender, green, blue and yellow. The most popular are the whites, pastel pinks, roses, lavender and purples. Colour comes from the mussel species and water quality. Generally pearls assume the colour of the shell in which they form, but permanent dyes are used today for some colours as well. Freshwater pearls come in many shapes and the most rarest pearl shape is the round as it is the most difficult to culture. Other shapes include droplet, button. oval, Baroque and circled.
Pearl Symbolism
Purity, peace and protection, representing the Moon, winter and cold, White is often associated with humility, innocence and modesty. Pearl is the accepted gem stone for 3rd and 30th wedding anniversaries and is thought to strengthen love relationships. Pearl with a yellow lustre brings wealth. A reddish pearl makes one intelligent. White Pearl bestows fame and the Pearl with a blue hue is the giver of good fortune.
Pearl Care
Pearls respond well to being worn. Natural body oils make them "mellow" and brings out an inner luminescence. Pearls do not, however, take well to chemicals such as perfume, hair spray, cosmetics and perspiration. Clean pearls with a soft cloth and keep them in a dark place between wearings. Very dry, very hot conditions will dehydrate a pearl over time, causing it to turn dark and even crack or shatter. Keep pearls away from household cleansers, too, as these chemicals will destroy pearls.
Pearl Trivia
Cleopatra dissolved a single pearl in a glass of wine to win a bet with Marc Antony that she could consume the wealth of a nation at one meal!
