PROBABLY one of the greatest tributes paid to the late Alex. L. du Toit is the demand for and appearance of this third edition of his well-known work the Geology of South Africa.

At the time of his death in 1948 Dr du Toit had almost completed the revision of the text for this third edition, and he left among his papers a series of notes concerning the revision of certain sections. The text has been completed by Mr S. H. Haughton. Since the authors death, important new facts have accumulated and certain new views, particularly on problems of correlation, have been promulgated by geologists working in South Africa.

Where these latter have differed materially from those held by the author, Mr Haughton has drawn the readers attention to them by means of editorial footnotes intended to direct him to the various papers in which the pertinent information is to be found. As before, the work is extensively illustrated, containing 41 plates, 73 text figures and a geological map.
