Royal Red Bengal Tiger ( A caricature of General Sir George Adam Wood of Waterloo fame, etc.).

Publisher: London, G. Humphrey, 27 St. James St.

Publication Date: 1819

About this Item

General Sir George Adam Wood (1767-1831 ) was a celebrated British soldier who took part in the Peninsular War and fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, 4 years prior to the publication of this print. He was well-known for his shock of red hair and ( presumably ) his bellicose nature, hence his depiction as a tiger with his profiled head, looking right, the right fore-paw resting on a skull. There is a background of palm trees and jungle grass with a skeleton of a horse just visible. A human skull and bones are on the lower left. The original rare etching, hand coloured. Sheet is 28 cm by 23 cm. There is an expertly repaired short closed tear on the upper margin and a few light small stains on the outer margins. Seller Inventory # 80228
