George McCall Theal, History of the Boers in South Africa, or The Wanderings and Wars of the Emigrant Farmers from their Leaving the Cape Colony to the Acknowledgement of their Independence by Great Britain (Africana Collectanea Series no. 45).
Cape Town: C. Struik, 1973. Hardcover half bound in (artificial?) leather with a monogram of the publisher embossed on the front cover and the title on a green piece of leather pasted to the spine. 392 pp, index, three maps, both endpapers printed with a map.
This facsimile edition is limited to 1000 copies, but it does not state which number this one is (the space for that is left blank). From the style of binding this copy must be one of the 50 copies bound in a 'de luxe style'.
Book in very good condition - tightly bound and internally mostly clean except for some foxing on the endpapers and the opening and closing pages of the book. Previous owner's name in ink on the ffep. The cover is in a reasonable condition but there are several nicks to the leather, especially at the corners, while the green piece of leather with the title on it is coming loose from the spine. The spine also has a couple of scratches and nicks on the leather. Please study the photos below which form part of the description.
The first detailed history of the Great Trek and the history leading up to the founding of the Boer Republics in the 1850s. Despite the problems to the cover of this book, this is still a worth-while edition to have for the collector of Africana. Price reduced due to the defects described above. Most copies of this title sell for R600-1000 each.
Postage: R50 with SAPO or else R100 with Postnet (branch to branch). Naturally I would gladly combine items to save on postage, so please do have a look at my other listings.
