Sometimes deemed a tacky popular piece in the operatic canon you learn from the booklet that Nietzsche adored it but that many thought he said that to spite Wagner; the kind of information that might warm the cockles of some hearts. It feels indeed tacky at times; but has enormously original segments of very lyrical work studded through this very long opera going over 3 hours in toto. The recording here is very good crystal-clear. The spoken pieces can irritate after a while but 3 hours of opera which no punctuation would be overkill for most listeners; so all in all quite an interesting piece as well as a hugely popular one. - Discogs User Review
