Description: Georgian Chinoiserie porcelain Cup and Saucer Circa 1820-1830 Ref. C-96
Maker: English Pottery, unknown maker
Date: 1820 - 1830
History: The charming cup and saucer duo (typically unmarked) is a distinct type of English filled-in or clobbered transfer on a fine translucent white porcelain pearlware which appeared for a brief period in 1820s during the reign of George IV.  Both pieces are embossed,  having a polychrome transfer Chinoiserie decoration.  These Chinoiserie pieces stand out against many other potteries, due to their brightly enamelled colouring which were hand-painted as an over-glaze. A number of companies could have produced this duo, namely Hilditch, Ridgway, Rathbone, Copeland and Garrett, Samuel Alcock. The most likely candidate is possibly Hilditch.  The shape of the cup and handle, the depth of the saucer and lack of a centre 'well' for the cup to rest in, all point to the early 1820-1840 era. A fairly heavy glaze, showing an 'orange-peel' effect and small black spots (due to contamination of coal dust from the kilns) also help to substantiate the date.
Marks/Observations: No back stamp is found.  Very slight staining to a small area underside of the saucer
Condition: Very good. Both pieces are in excellent condition with very little loss of paint and no cracks or chips evident.
Dimensions: The cup stands 62 mm in height, diameter, 87 mm in diameter. The saucer has a diameter of 147 mm and stands 28 mm high.
Price: R450.00
