Georgian tortoise shell trinket box with gilt Sterling silver fittings. This lovely tortoise shell trinket box dates to between 1801 and 1822. It is manufactured from tortoise shell, and has 2 hinges, 4 corners, a lock and latch manufactured from gilt Sterling silver. These fittings are hallmarked IR (John Reily mark for between 1801-1822), lion passant (Sterling silver) and George's head (duty mark). I suspect that the box may have come over with the 1820 Settlers. It measures 18cm x 14cm x 6cm. The box is structurally solid, but has some damage to the tortoise shell in some places as can be expected after 200 years. Great buy.
