Georgian transfer and hand-painted Hilditch and Son plate Circa 1822-1830 Ref.27

Not much is known about Hilditch and Son. They were a short lived (1822-1830) and purely Georgian manufacturer of earthenwares and porcelain at Lane End in North Staffordshire. Most designs were printed often in underglaze blue, or in sepia with on glaze enamelled colours ('clobbering'). Fine quality porcelain tea wares were a speciality of the company and reflect the chinoiserie taste of the time. The 'H&S' mark in various forms is scarce, and many unmarked and mainly clobbered tea cups, milk jugs etc can be attributed to Hilditch.

The charming plate shown above, shows a very rare Hilditch mark, and is a distinct type of English filled-in or clobbered transfer on a fine translucent white porcelain pearlware which appeared for a brief period in 1820s during the reign of George IV. It shows a simple polychrome transfer in black with a Chinoiserie decoration of a lady holding a green umbrella with a child in the forefront. A flower arrangement is portrayed on the right, with many different types of flowers. These Chinoiserie pieces stand out against many other potteries, due to their brightly enamelled colouring which were hand-painted as an over-glaze. Sadly, there appears to be little product-related documentation left from any of these relatively small, obscure manufacturers, such as pattern books or product lists with recognisable descriptions.

The plate measures 21cm in diameter and stands 3cm high. The overall front appearance remains in good condition with no loss of paint, no cracks nor chips to the rim, but, rather unusual, there are three 'stilt' marks on the front, indicating that the plate was glazed upside down. There are some chips to the foot rim - please see photo. The glaze shows a typical 'orange-peel' texture, created by minute bubbles.  Glazing was still a technique to be mastered.
