Geranium is a genus of 422 species of flowering annual, biennial, and perennial plants that are commonly known as the cranesbills. It is found throughout the temperate regions of the world and the mountains of the tropics, but mostly in the eastern part of the Mediterranean region. Geranium pulchrum is a robust shrublet up to 120cm tall. It is endemic to the Drakensberg where it is found in marshy areas and on streambanks at altitudes of 1500-2200m. Pulchrum means beautiful, demonstrated by this gem from the South African mountains. Dense sprays of largish purple-veined mauve flowers with leathery, silver-grey leaves.
