GERARD SEKOTO BY BARBARA LINDOP. FIRST EDITION, 1988, HARDCOVER, CLOTHBOUND WITH MINOR WATER STAINING ALONG BOTTOM BORDER OF FRONT COVER, 294 PAGES, NO INSCRIPTIONS OR NAMES, CONTENTS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

"The aim of this project has been the desire to return Gérard Sekoto's paintings to the people of South Africa and to afford the artist, through the publication of his works, the recognition he so richly deserves. The wish has also been to ensure that the book will be readily accessible to those people who inspired his work and for whom it is of direct concern Sekoto portrayed the dignity of humanity, surviving despite extreme adversity within a strictly controlled political structure. His subject matter is instilled with an heroic quality reminiscent of Millet and Courbet, the 19th century French Realist painters, whilst his painting techniques recall some of the great Post Impressionist artists. His insight into his fellow human beings within their social environment is profound. His paintings are subtle commentary on the social, political and economic circumstances of blacks in South Africa and have great relevance to the present-day situation. This book is not intended to be a catalogue raisonnée but is an attempt to establish some sort of perspective on Sekoto's art." - Foreword
