ANTIQUE (1848-1870S) 150-170 YEAR OLD! GERMAN KPM ROCAILLE SHAPED LOBSTER DISH WITH EAGLE SCEPTOR MARK

RARELY SEEN ANTIQUE GERMAN KPM (KÖNIGLICHE PORZELLAN MANUFAKTUR) PORCELAIN TWIN BOWL LOBSTER DISH.  ENCIRLED EAGLE AND SCEPTER MARK USED FOR A SHORT PERIOD FROM 1849 TO 1870. STILL IN VERY CONDITION FOR 170 YEAR OLD PORCELAIN.
 
THIS DISH (888G) IS RELATIVE HEAVY AND MADE WITH A THICK (3-5MM) PORCELAIN. IT HAS A ROCAILLE SHELL LIKE SHAPE WITH QUEEN OF HOLLAND COLOR DÉCOR. THIS IS THE SECOND OF TWO OF THESE KPM LOBSTER DISHES THAT WILL GO ON AUCTION THIS WEEK.

THIS DISH WAS MADE IN WHAT IS CALLED ROCAILLE SHAPE WITH RAISED SHELL OR CLAM LIKE DÉCOR TO THE WHITE PORCELAIN. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS.
 
"QUEEN OF HOLLAND" DÉCOR: The set is decorated with handpainted (please see photos) maroon or burgundy and cream scrollwork decor on the edges with gold gilt overglazed sprigs and blossom decoration on top.
THIS LATER ON CAME TO BE KNOWN AS THE QUEEN OF HOLLAND DÉCOR AFTER A SET WITH THIS TYPE OF DÉCOR WAS GIVEN AS A PRESENT IN 1901 from Kaiser Wilhelm II for the wedding of Queen Wilhelmine of Holland.
 
MARKINGS: MARK USED BETWEEN 1849 AND 1970
ENCIRCLED PRUSSIAN EAGLE HOLDING AN ROYAL SCEPTER AND AN ORB WITH TEXT MANUFAKTUR KONIGLICHE PORZELLA AROUND. ON TOP IS ADDED BLUE SCEPTER MARK. BOTH APPLIED UNDER GLAZE. THIS MARK WAS INTRODUCED IN 1849 AND IN USE UNTIL AROUND 1870.

WHAT IS KPM PORCELAIN?
KPM, or Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur ('Royal Porcelain Factory' in English), is Berlins oldest porcelain factory and Germanys second oldest. It was founded in 1763 by King Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great) and continues to produce porcelain to this day.
 
SOME HISTORY ABOUT KPM MARKS: When Frederick the Great took over the manufactory from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky on 19 September 1763, he also provided the brand's emblem: the cobalt blue sceptre from the electoral coat-of-arms of Brandenburg. THE PORCELAIN IS MARKED AFTER THE FIRST FIRING AND BEFORE THE GLAZING PROCESS. BEFORE THE SCEPTRE IS APPLIED TO THE PORCELAIN, THE ITEM IS SUBJECT TO STRICT QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES. AFTERWARDS, THE PORCELAIN IS GLAZED AND FIRED FOR THE SECOND TIME. The color bonds inseparably with the glaze and makes the piece of porcelain forgery-proof.
In the beginning, the trademark was applied in blue on white porcelain and in brown on painted porcelain. In 1837, the letters KPM were added to protect the brand from counterfeits. Also before 1837 the mark was painted and after 1837 is was stamped. A few years later, the royal Prussian eagle became part of the trademark. In the following decades, the trademark underwent slight changes until the production was transferred to Selb. In those years (1944-1957), the porcelain was marked with the letter S underneath the sceptre. In 2000, the letters KPM were reintroduced as part of the logo.
