On auction is this vintage Post Office hand stamping device Town of Rosiski Now Lithuania.
This wood-handle and metal head stamp and it’s markings are from the German occupation of Rosiski, a rare stamp. The date shown is 18 VIII 41 which should read 18 August 1941? The size of the stamp is 135 mm with the diameter 32 mm. The metal dates have a locking mechanism to look the relevant dates in place. This rotation function is still working.
In the summer of 1915, the German army occupied the city of Rokiski. When the war ended, the area became part of the new Republic of Lithuania. Rokiškis was granted city rights in 1920. Because of strained relationships between Lithuania and the nearby newly created Republics of Poland and Latvia. Rokiškis was economically isolated during the inter-war period.
Can't imagine many of these survived as they were clearly the property of the German Postal Service!
A cancellation is a postal marking on a postage stamp to deface the stamp and prevent its re-use. Cancellations come in a huge variety of designs, shapes, sizes and colours. Cancellations commonly include the date and post office location where the stamps were mailed, in addition to lines or bars designed to cover the stamp itself. The term "postal marking" sometimes is used to refer specifically to the part that contains the date and posting location, although the term often is used interchangeably with "cancellation. The portion of a cancellation that is designed to deface the stamp. Cancellations can affect the value of stamps to collectors, positively or negatively. Many stamp collectors and postal history collectors collect cancellations in addition to the stamps themselves. And this stamp has historical value of note! Will ensure the item is sent in protective packaging so that it arrive in good condition.
As with all my auctions this item may be returned at the buyer’s expense for a refund of the purchase price (less shipping), provided it is returned in the same condition as it was sent.
