From German Southwest Africa, a kS98 Saw-Back Bayonet with Leather Grips issued to the South West African Kaiserliche Schutztruppe (German Imperial Colonial Troops). Made by in Germany by Erfurt in 1909. Comes with a matching steel scabbard.

Probably picked-up and taken home to Natal as a souvenir by a South African soldier after the GSWA Campaign of 1914-15 (some information is available on this, but the name of the soldier is just a good guess). Further information at Bayonets of the South West African Schutztruppe.

Type with leather grips attached by three rivets. Length of blade 25 cm. Length of hilt 13 cm. Weight of bayonet 400 gm. Weight of bayonet plus scabbard 520 gm. The stamped markings are identified as follows:

  • On the hilt and on the scabbard, matching unique numbers: “K.S.149.”
  • On the flat of the blade at the base, the makers name: “ERFURT” below imperial crown.
  • On the spine of the blade at the base, the date mark: “W/09” below the imperial crown and below all that the Kaiser’s (Wilhelm II) monogram.
