On July 1, 1931, the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was en route to or had just arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland, as part of its "Islandfahrt" (Iceland Flight).
The airship had departed from Friedrichshafen, Germany, on June 30, 1931, for a flight to Reykjavik and back, primarily to carry and exchange mail for philatelic purposes, which helped finance its operations. The airship arrived in Reykjavik, where mail was dropped, on July 1, 1931. Mail dropped there bears a specific "1.VII.31" arrival postmark.
The "Islandfahrt" was a preliminary trip ahead of the more famous multi-stage Arctic Flight (Polarfahrt), which took place later that month, from July 24 to July 31, 1931
