Gladioli 'Green Star' thrives in the glorious South African climate. Here's how to ensure yours flourish:
Sunlight: Plant your corms in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sun means more magnificent blooms!
Soil Perfection: They love well-draining soil. Amend heavy clay soils with compost to ensure good drainage and rich nutrients. A sandy loam is ideal.
Watering Wisdom: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during active growth and flowering. In our warm South African summers, regular watering is key, but avoid waterlogging. Think a good drink, not a swim! 💧
Planting Time: For stunning summer blooms in South Africa, plant your corms from late winter to early summer (August to December). Stagger your planting every two weeks for a continuous display of colour!
Feeding for Fabulousness: A balanced fertiliser every few weeks during the growing season will encourage robust growth and abundant flowers.
Feel the pride as your 'Green Star' Gladioli ascends, transforming your garden with its unparalleled charm. This isn't just gardening; it's creating a personal haven, a place of beauty and wonder.

Position and soil
Gladioli look magnificent towards the back of a mixed perennial border. Groups of about 25 look best, although groups of 10 in single colours also make a bold statement. The soil should first be loosened to a depth of 20 cm. Hybrid gladioli like a compost-rich soil mix and need a full sun position to thrive. If they are planted where wind is a problem, they will need staking.
Further Care
Watering is very important and you must not allow the sub-soil to dry out. If you notice any harmful insects or fungal rust then you can treat it by spraying with an appropriate fungal spray.
