This is a high-quality GLAZED EARTHENWARE teapot and matching creamer, featuring a deep, vibrant cobalt blue finish. The teapot follows the iconic "Betty" designa globe-shaped body engineered for optimal tea leaf infusion and superior heat retention. This set is unmarked, which is common for utilitarian boutique pottery produced in the historic Midlands "Potteries" region.
PROVENANCE AND HISTORY The "Betty" teapot design originated in the late 17th century in STOKE-ON-TRENT, STAFFORDSHIRE, using local red Etruria Marl clay. While the traditional "Brown Betty" used a Rockingham glaze, the COBALT BLUE variant emerged as a popular aesthetic alternative in the 20th century.
The rounded shape of the "Betty" is not merely decorative; it was specifically designed to allow tea leaves to "swirl" as water is poured, resulting in a more flavourful, less bitter brew. Although unmarked, the craftsmanship of this setcharacterised by its weight and the precision of the handle-to-spout balancemirrors the quality of established makers like ADDERLEY CERAMICS or CAULDON, who have sustained this English heritage design for centuries.
