Glen Line Limited 10-2-1933
Original Complimentary letter of sea rescue.
An original letter (collectors item), to third officer for meritorious sea rescue of crew off fishing vessel off Hong Kong.
Glen Line letterhead has the original signature of their marine super intendant. The letterhead also has 2 emblem sets of distinct watermarks by printers which become clearly visible when held up in the light. The wording of each set of watermarks reads "Temple Bar" above with a watermark of a temple and under the temple emblem reads also the watermark "Partridge and Cooton".
Due to the age of the paper, it is off whitish cream colour. The size of the letterhead is 20cm x 25cm. Included also are 2 copies of letters (not original) regarding the sinking and rescue.
Also included are copies from the 3rd officers (certificate of discharge book) showing rank and sea time on the vessel Glenshiel. The 3rd officer F. Marriott later joined Union Castle and rose to marine super-intendant of that company.
Describing the incident, on the 31st October 1932, the crew of the Japanese fishing vessel "Hyuga Maru" were rescued by the master and crew of the m.v. Glenshiel when their fishing vessel was in distress and drifting 100 miles south west of Hong Kong. All 31 members of the crew were taken aboard the Glenshiel and arrived safely in Hong Kong.
The Count Yssuya Ucheda from imperial Japanese consul expressed his thanks and gratitude for the rescue operation to serve France's Oswald Kindly (British ambassador Tokyo). I was told in 2015 that these type of letters are well sought after at marine auction fares in the UK. I'm selling this original letter together with the other copies as mentioned for R280.
