Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling
Despite being the No.1-selling malt whisky brand, Glenfiddich is occasionally accused by some malt fans of lacking real complexity. Older expressions, however, are a totally different matter, as evidenced by this masterpiece. The product of truly inspired cask selection and blending, atypically for a Speyside there is little or no sherry influence here, allowing the elegant, floral, slightly smoky distillery character to shine through. Made in batches of around 600 bottles per year.
Tasting Notes by Michael Jackson
Colour: Deep, greeny gold. Ripening plum.
Nose: Deliciously appetizing. A real depth of honey aromas, which seem to emerge in layers, as though each were extracted from a different flower. Then beeswax. Finally, a balancing flowery dryness and faint burnt-heather smokiness.
Body:Â Lean but silky smooth.
Palate: Very slow, sustained emergence of flavours. Firm, dryish, restrained, honey, becoming scenty. Gradually giving way to biscuity maltiness. A hint of bitter chocolate. Finally a surge of soft, oily smokiness, with some peaty dryness.
Finish: Hint of anis. Satisfying. Long.
Score: 93 points
