Women, the Scriptures and the Church. 2007 paperback with 140 pages in very good condition.
The position of women in many conservative Reformed churches is still a source of serious controversy amongst serious believers. Often women are not allowed to become minsters (pastors), elders or even deacons. This position is based on what is seen as to be in line with the teachings in the Holy Scriptures. The author carefully studied the relevant parts in the Bible in the original languages and in modern translations, applies the accepted hermeneutical rules and comments on their contents. His conclusions are clear: The Bible and especially the New Testament teaches no such firm and fast rules on the position of women. All the often quoted writings by Paul and the other apostles are time and place bound. Women are in fact free to teach and to be elders and deacons in the churches. Previous restrictions are of a purely social and cultural nature and are not applicable today. The various viewpoints held over many years are stated and criticized.
