Godfrey Ndaba was born in Johannesburg in 1947. His interest in art started at the early age of ten, when he began sketching his surroundings and anything that was appealing and different. He was one of the first to attend the art classes at the Jubilee Social Centre where he got his first professional instruction in art. He then went to the Ndaleni Art School in Natal, where he studied and became an art teacher. He taught art at various schools until such time as his own paintings became so in demand that he was compelled to become a full time artist.

However, Godfrey loved his teaching and the eager response it brought from the children, and he still gives free lessons to all who want them.

Godfrey concentrates mainly on depicting his impressions of his fellow human beings, having a great interest in people. He loves observing people and expressing his feelings through his drawings. "Miners are my favourite subjects and I often go underground and watch them work." He is also very fond of Sculpture.

Godfrey's first exhibition was at the Y.M.C.A. in Soweto, then followed one at Dorkay House, under the patronage of Mr. Sydney Spamla. He had an exhibition at the Hyde Park Gallery which was a complete sell-out and this certainly marked the turning point in Godfrey's career. Many successful exhibitions followed and while in a group exhibit of Black and White artists in Botswana, Godfrey was acclaimed a a future great.

Godfrey was married and has a daughter. He is a keen football player and enjoys music and reading when not working.

The greatest day in his life, says Godfrey, was when he was awarded the first prize for his sculpture at Fort Hare.

His work has been sold in galleries and privately throughout Israel, Australia, Europe and the United States of America.
