- A Rhodesian Epic

"Arthur Shearly Cripps was an "irregular" missionary whose legacy can today help the Anglican Church, and indeed all churches in Zimbabwe, to discern what their role is in nation building. At a time when most missionaries would not dare stand against the colonial government, Shearly Cripps stood up as a human rights activist who diligently defended the rights of the oppressed, poor Africans. The paper focuses on how Shearly Cripps dealt with the issues of the poor; ecumenism and national cooperation; justice, cheap labour, unjust wages and taxation; the land question; as well as racial equality and the franchise question. The paper calls for more of God's irregulars like Shearly Cripps. It argues that Zimbabwe needs Christian leaders who have the spiritual and political tenacity to address these socio-political and economic ills that continue to bedevil the masses today. Shearly Cripps left us a legacy. If we learn from it, our efforts in nation building will create a post-independence country with a truly democratic culture."
