South African novelist. Sarah Millin was one of South Africa’s major literary figures. Her novels deal with the racial complexities of the country, especially in the rural areas. The first work to establish her reputation was God’s Step-children (1924), a perceptive study of the Cape Coloureds. She wrote major biographies of Cecil Rhodes (1933) and Jan SMUTS (1936), and a history of South Africa. During World War II, she kept a diary which was published in six volumes (1944–8).
