Minted in 2010 as part of the Natura Giants of Africa Series, this beautifully designed gold proof coin celebrates the Black Rhino.
The obverse shows the Black Rhino walking on the path '2010 South Africa'. It appears to be walking into its uncertain future as a result of the resurgence of sophisticated poaching methods of rhino horns.
The reverse features a portrait of the Black Rhino in the shadow of itself. Artistically this refers to its uncertain future or alternatively its demise. The IUCN Red List is depicted showing the schocking dwindling statistics of the Black Rhino from 70,000 strong in 1970 to only 4,240 in 2010.
