Good King Wenceslas by Mildred Corell Luckhardt is a beautifully illustrated retelling of one of the best-loved Christmas legends, bringing to life the timeless story behind the famous carol. Originally published by Abingdon Press in 1964 and issued in Great Britain by Epworth Press in 1966, this charming edition features expressive illustrations by acclaimed artist Gordon Laite, whose distinctive artwork captures the warmth, generosity and medieval atmosphere of the classic tale.
Good King Wenceslas recounts the legendary acts of kindness of King Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia, whose compassion for the poor during a harsh winter became one of the enduring symbols of the Christmas season. Luckhardt's accessible narrative makes this an engaging read for younger audiences while preserving the historical and spiritual significance of the legend. Gordon Laite's illustrations, printed throughout the volume, add considerable visual appeal and make this an attractive collectible for lovers of vintage children's books and Christmas literature.
Published by Epworth Press, a respected religious publisher, Good King Wenceslas reflects the high production standards of mid-twentieth-century children's publishing. It appeals not only to collectors of Christmas books but also to those interested in Christian folklore, illustrated books, and works by Gordon Laite.
Increasingly difficult to locate in complete hardcover editions with the original dust jacket, Good King Wenceslas remains a desirable addition to collections of vintage holiday books, religious children's literature and classic illustrated gift books. It makes a thoughtful seasonal gift or an attractive display piece during the Christmas period.
