GORGEOUS CIRCA 1934 RCA VICTOR MODEL 128 TUBE RADIO TURNS ON!
THIS IS A GORGEOUS NEAR ANTIQUE RCA VICTOR MODEL 128 TOMBSTONE RADIO (CIRCA 1934) THAT STILL TURNS ON! IT HAS A WONDERFUL WALNUT VENEER FINISH WOODEN CABINET IS THE CLASSIC SHOULDERED TOMBSTONE SHAPE WITH A ROUNDED CATHEDRAL TOP. THE FLUTED SIDE PILASTERS CONJURE AN IMPRESSION OF STRENGTH AND TOGETHER WITH THE HERRINGBONE GRILLE-CLOTH AND VERTICAL GRILLE BARS COMPLETE THIS RADIO'S HANDSOME PRESENTATION.
The Radio has according to online info 6 tubes and tunes from 540 KHz to 18 MHz, covering the AM Broadcast Band and 2 Shortwave bands. This radio was featured in the 1970's television series "The Brady Bunch". Greg Brady had the Model 128 in his attic-converted bedroom.
This magnificent RCA model 128 radio of the tombstone genre was introduced in late 1934 for the 1934/35 model season with an original 1934 purchase price of $69.95. The model 128 was one of a group of luxury models new for the 1934/35 season that debuted RCA's so-called "magic brain". This innovation was described in the company's advertising as "...the almost human unit that directs your radio reception just like your own brain directs your body".
IN MY ALBEIT HUMBLE JUDGEMENT, THIS IS A SIMPLY GORGEOUS RADIO. THE LARGE, SOFTLY LIT CIRCULAR DIAL (PLEASE SEE PHOTO) IS SET BETWEEN THE GRACEFUL LINES OF THE ARCHES ABOVE AND THE CONTROL KNOBS BELOW. IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN REFURBISHED AT SOME POINT AS THE PLUG AND LINE CORD HAVE BEEN REPLACED.
SIZE 40CM WIDE 30CM DEEP 50CM HIGH WEIGHT 15KG
CONDITION: SOME DAMAGE TO SPEAKER GRILL CLOTH AND CABINET VENEER FINISH. IT STILL TURNS ON AND LIGHTS UP. VOLUME CONTROL IS WORKING BUT I COULD NOT PICK UP MUSIC. SOLD AS IS IN NEED TO BE CHECKED OVER BY A PROFESSIONAL BUT GUARANTEED NOT DEAD ON ARRIVAL.
RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA (RCA) 1919-present: The RCA Corporation was a major American electronics company, which was founded in 1919 as the Radio Corporation of America. An innovative and progressive company, RCA was the dominant electronics and communications firm in the United States for over five decades. In the early 1920s, RCA was at the forefront of the mushrooming radio industry. RCA was the major producer of vacuum tubes, which were branded Radiotron in the United States. By 1975, RCA had completely switched from tubes to solid-state devices. In January 1929, RCA purchased the Victor Company (at that time the worlds largest manufacturer of records and phonographs); this acquisition became known as the RCA Victor division of the Radio Corporation of America. During the 1970s, RCA's seemingly impregnable stature as America's leader in technology, innovation and home entertainment began to weaken as RCA began to face increasing domestic competition from international electronics firms. Today, RCA exists as a brand name only which are currently owned by Sony.
