Gorgeous Denby "Cottage Blue" Straight Sided Jug.
The Denby "Cottage Blue" range was first introduced in 1926 and features this distinctive blue exterior with a contrasting yellow or cream interior. Generally referred to as a jug or pitcher, often specified by size in pints, such as a 1 pint or 2 Pint version. This pitcher is a 2 Pint version.
This beautiful jug has distinctive aging on the inside of the jug, which appears as fine, hairline cracks in the glaze, is known as crazing. Crazing is a common occurrence in older pottery and vintage stoneware due to differences in the expansion rates of the clay body and the glaze over time and exposure to temperature changes. It is a sign of age but does not necessarily indicate a structural flaw or make it unsafe to use.
The Denby Cottage Blue pattern was in production for a significant period, from its introduction in 1926 until around 1983 or 1984.
Pieces with a printed "Bourne Denby England" stamp, especially the straight-sided jugs, date to the earlier period, approximately 1915-1930 (some early production predates the official 1926 pattern name). These early pieces often feature a deeper ochre or mustard-yellow interior.
The backstamp is hardly legible, and I could make out some lettering. Research suggests the full wording on the base of your jug would have been the company name at the time, which was Joseph Bourne & Son Ltd. or similar.
The text you interpreted as "LOU'S" is an abbreviation for the location: Derby. The full mark typically reads "Denby Pottery, Near Derby". The company remained under the ownership and management of the Bourne family until 1942. Joseph Bourne Wheeler was the sole proprietor from 1907 until the business was incorporated as a Limited company in 1916, and he continued as the governing director until his death in 1942.
The backstamp on your jug is a crucial indicator of its history and helps confirm its age as an early piece of Denby ware produced between 1916 and the 1930s.
