Offered for sale is a fine large Gouda PZH earthenware candlestick hand painted in the Gloria Royal pattern and made 70 years ago in the year 1950. This is a good example of the eclectic styling of Gouda ceramics in the early Mid 20th century; the shape of the candlestick with its elegant sinuous profile and large whiplash handle is typical of pieces made in the Art Nouveau period dating from the late 19th to early 20th Century however the pattern is distinctly modernist a floral spray in mostly earth toned colours while the candletick also has spray painted/airbrushed pale celadon green accents on top of the mottled off white chamois coloured base colour. The quality of the paint work is good and detailed , precisely carefully accentuating the form with an undulating green border on the base ; stippled yellow dots on the handle and a counterbalancing yellow undulating border on the upper sconce and cup. The candlestick has hand painted marks on the base including the pattern name Gloria Royal ; the manufacturers famous " little house" , Lazarus Gate logo , the painters initial P and the date mark to the left of the little house logo as well as serial numbers which are the shape and pattern codes.
