Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) Review

Gameplay & Mechanics

Grand Theft Auto V on PS3 delivers an open-world action experience packed with driving, shooting, exploration, and dynamic sandbox chaos. The games core innovation is its three-protagonist system, letting players switch between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor at almost any time. Each character offers unique abilities: slow-motion driving, bullet-time shooting, and boosted melee damage respectively.

Driving feels tight and responsive, while gunplay is more refined than in earlier GTA entries. Missions vary from simple chases to elaborate setups involving stealth, sniping, flying, and multi-stage heists. The world reacts to player behavior, with police AI offering escalating intensity depending on the wanted level.

The PS3 version, while technically limited compared to later platforms, still handles the vast world impressively, though occasional frame drops and pop-in occur.

Story & Characters

The narrative centers on the intertwined lives of three criminals navigating heists, personal conflicts, and the underworld of Los Santos. The writing is sharp, satirical, and character-driven, making each protagonist feel distinct and engaging.

  • Michael grapples with retirement, family dysfunction, and identity.

  • Franklin seeks opportunity and upward mobility.

  • Trevor brings chaos, unpredictability, and dark humour.

The story cleverly intertwines their arcs, culminating in choices that affect the final outcome. Dialogue and cutscenes are among the strongest in the franchise.

Modes & Features

  • Single-player story mode

  • GTA Online (launched shortly after release)

  • Side missions and character-driven tasks

  • Heists with preparation stages and optional approaches

  • A massive amount of secondary content: stunt jumps, collectibles, hunting, races, flight school, and more

GTA Online on PS3 initially provided a growing, evolving multiplayer experience filled with missions, PvP modes, free-roam chaos, and character progression. While content expanded heavily over the years, the PS3 version eventually became limited, but at launch it was a huge draw.

Graphics & Presentation

For a 2013 PS3 title, the game pushes the hardware impressively. Los Santos is expansive, diverse, and lively, with bustling city streets, deserts, oceans, mountains, and rural zones.

Lighting, shadows, and animations hold up surprisingly well, though the PS3 version does show:

  • Texture popping

  • Occasional frame rate dips

  • Reduced detail compared to newer platforms

Despite these limitations, the world feels alive, colourful, and immersive.

Sound & Music

GTA V features a robust soundtrack across its many fictional radio stations, offering rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, and more. The voice acting is exceptional, giving personality and nuance to every major character.

Environmental audiotraffic, city noise, wildlife, gunfireis richly designed, enhancing immersion. Sound design is one of the game's strongest areas.

Final Verdict

Grand Theft Auto V on PS3 remains one of the generations standout achievements. The world is massive, the characters are memorable, and the gameplay is varied and refined. Even with hardware constraints, it delivers a compelling and immersive open-world experience.

Score: 9 / 10
A landmark title that pushed the PS3 to its limits while delivering one of the best open-world adventures ever made.

Pros

  • Three-character switching system

  • Huge, detailed open world

  • Engaging missions and heists

  • Excellent writing and voice acting

  • Strong variety of activities

  • Memorable characters and story

Cons

  • Technical limitations on PS3

  • Occasional texture pop-in and frame dips

  • GTA Onlines long-term support outgrew last-gen hardware

Recommendation

A must-own PS3 title for fans of open-world games, crime dramas, or immersive storytelling. Even years later, it remains one of the systems most impressive achievements.
