Melt Jacobus Brink is veral bekend vir sy grapperige versies, stories en toneelstukke met Kaaps-Hollands (vroeë Afrikaans) in sy geskrifte. Sy taalgebruik word as n tussentaal beskryf, d.w.s. nie meer Nederlands nie, maar nog nie Afrikaans nie.

As sulks was hy n belangrike oorgangsfiguur tussen die Eerste en Tweede Afrikaanse Taalbeweging. Brink was in sy tyd n belangrike baanbreker en miskien ook die eerste wat ons mense geleer het om vir hulself te lag.

Melt Jacobus Brink is best known for his witty verses, stories and plays with Cape Dutch (early Afrikaans) in his writings. His language is described as an intermediate language, i.e. no longer Dutch, but not yet Afrikaans.

As such, he was an important transitional figure between the First and Second Afrikaans Language Movements. Brink was an important pioneer in his time and perhaps also the first to teach our people to laugh at themselves.
