Great Britain : GOLD Third Guinea of King George III of 1804
The Third Guinea (7/-) was only issued between 1797 and 1813. They were issued largely as a response to the shortage of gold in Britain caused by the wars with France.
In 1801, George III dropped his claim to the French Throne as Ireland came into the Union, so the reverse legend was changed to reflect this, reading “Defender of the Faith, King of Britain”.
These beautiful gold coins also circulated at the Cape of Good Hope.
