The title "Great Elephant" is not an elephant but a man, Chaka, who is king of the Zulu nation in the early 1800's.
The narrator tells of his family's experience as white Christians settling in Zululand and the fortunes and misfortunes that occur from the time he was age 6 through age 16.
Story is sometimes hair-raising adventure. Filled with cultural insights. Reads more like history than fiction.
