Green Fennel, also known as Common Fennel, is a versatile and aromatic herb known for its feathery foliage and flavorful seeds. Perfect for culinary and medicinal uses, fennel seeds add a distinctive anise-like flavor to dishes and are valued for their digestive benefits.
Unique Qualities:
Growing Season: Green Fennel thrives when planted in early spring or late summer, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It is a hardy plant that can tolerate a variety of soil conditions and is suitable for garden beds or containers.
Time to Harvest: Expect to harvest your Green fennel seeds approximately 90-115 days after planting. The seeds are ready when the flower heads turn brown and dry. Cut the seed heads and allow them to dry further before threshing to collect the seeds. Regular harvesting of seeds ensures a continuous supply for culinary and medicinal use.
Green fennel differs from florence fennel in that it doesn't develop a swollen base. Instead it just grows a normal stem with a ton of foliage and flowers. The seeds are the part that is used in food and to a minor extent the leaves. Its similiar to dill, but with dill the leaves are superior to the seeds and in dill the seeds are flat while in green fennel they are more moon crescent-like in shape
This is a great plant to attract hoverflies as well as other beneficial insects
