GREG GEORGIADES (15 February 1953)
Born in Pretoria and eleven years in, began playing the guitar; a passion that is firmly entrenched in this unique musician. Greg has been the quintessential sideman, adding his flair for musical power to the work of many different artists, such as Neill Solomon and the Uptown Rhythm Dogs, The Jazz Hounds, The Passengers, the late Mike Makhalemele and Jeff Maluleke. Extremely versatile, Greg performs on the Oud, Bouzouki and nylon string guitar. His Eastern touches can be clearly heard within the music of the AQ. Greg is currently working with his 'Mutant Harmony Trio' and the duo 'Strings and Skins'. He continues to live in Pretoria.
From SA Rock Digest ISSUE NUMBER 40:
There has been a very positive response to the recent 'Song For Ancestors' album by the Mutant Harmony Trio. This Pretoria-based trio, comprising Greg Georgiades, Marc Duby and Wynand van der Walt, will be appearing on the SABCTV program Geraas on Tuesday, November 30, where they will be showcasing the new video for 'Brazouki',the opening track on the album.
The band are also considering an offer to tour Oman in January, as well as the possibilty that 'Song For Ancestors' will be released in the Middle East and Europe early in 2000. Greg Georgiades, who fronts both the Mutant Harmony Trio and The Jazzhounds, has been one of the top jazz guitarists in Pretoria for many years. These two bands have made a string of creditable appearances recently. The Mutant Harmony Trio performed at the Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Bloemfontein, and will be playing at the Crossroads Jazz Cafe in Pretoria during December.
These appearances will feature their new drummer, Rob Watson, who will be replacing Wynand van der Walt when he leaves for an extended overseas trip. The Jazzhounds appeared at the recent Aardklop Festival in Potchefstroom, and will be performing at the upcoming Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Kimberly. Georgiades has also been working with Asish Joshi, and a new album from this duo, titled 'Samraad', is set for an early 2000 release. The duo will be performing at the upcoming Festival Of Living Treasures to be held in Shongwene on December 18. As with the Mutant's album, the predominant instruments featured on this album will be the oud (fretless lute), bouzouki and nylon acoustic guitar.
