Gregoire Boonzaier linocut; signed in pencil;  linocut size 21 - 15 cm; framed with glass front. Frame size 58 - 50 cm.

Gregoire Boonzaier was given an easel by Nita Spilhaus in 1926. Boonzaier made this very Linocut for Spilhaus in 1926. This is documented in a publication of SAADA Antiques Fair 2012 - Cape Town. This work therefore has particular significance in the annals of our South African art history.

Over the years, Gregoire developed and maintained a major presence in South African art and, in the opinion of many serious collectors of South African art, is fully deserving of the appellation doyen. Gregoire worked with many different mediums, such as oils, watercolours, pastels and graphics, each with consummate skill and authority. His choice of subject matter included Cape landscapes, old Cape Town street scenes, still life and portraits, all of which were handled in the inimitable style that became the hallmark of his work.

Following his first exhibition in Cape Town in 1925 Gregoire had numerous successful one-man exhibitions throughout South Africa and abroad. While a student in London from 1934-1937, he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, the London Group, and the New English Art Club. His works are to be found in many significant private and public collections including the South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Johannesburg Art Gallery; Pretoria Art Museum; Durban Art Gallery; Ann Bryant Gallery, East London; William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberly; Hester Rupert Art Museum, Graaf Reniet.

In 1959 Gregoire was awarded the Gold Medal for art by the SA academy of Science and Art, as well as Honorary Doctorate by the University of the Free State in 1983.Gregoire Boonzaier, one of South Africa's greatest and oldest artists, passed away at the age of 95 years.

This artist's work is sought after as an investment!
