This print is an original linocut by the renowned South African artist Gregoire Boonzaier, best known for his black-and-white street scenes and his sensitive documentation of Cape Towns historic neighbourhoods.
The artwork shows a street scene in District Six, one of the areas Boonzaier returned to frequently in his work. His linocuts from this period are widely recognised for their strong lines, expressive simplicity, and their role as a visual record of daily life in District Six and the Bo-Kaap before the forced removals of the Apartheid era.
The scene includes the classic architectural forms and lively street atmosphere that make Boonzaiers Cape works so distinctive. The print is signed Cregoria in the bottom left of the image area a signature mark found on many of his linocuts. His signed editions often include an additional pencil signature and date in the lower margin; this particular piece shows the signature only in the print area.
