Dr Heese was a senior researcher in history at the University of the Western Cape when he wrote this book. His 1976 PhD was for "Die Afrikaners in Angola 1880-1928". Although his book was written as an academic genealogical study, its publication caused such an uproar that many copies were destroyed or hidden away: in any event, copies are extremely difficult to come by only 30 years after the book was published. The uproar was because the author had identified some 750 families whose marriages or similar relationships were between "Europeans" and "Coloureds" in the period between Van Riebeeck's arrival in 1652 and the first British occupation in 1795. The alphabetical list runs from Abel to Zschech, with many well-known family names along the way .
